The House Over Echo Bay responds primarily to the topography of the hill, stepping its various volumes down and hugging the landscape. The complex is divided into four volumes; three of these are clad in wood and contain the main living area, the bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen, and the guest house; the fourth volume is expressed in concrete, breaking the material and formal language of the others and containing the studio. There is a play between the planes of the roof and the planes of the floor, with offsets that create more open and lively, or more constrained and quiet spaces. The orientation of the spaces aligns with the East/West axis, offering prime views of the sunset and sunrise, while blocking the harsher direct daytime light. The breaks in the roof plane create clerestory windows that bring natural light into the inner spaces. The planted roof replaces much of the permeable ground the house displaced and provides a thermal cap to regulate interior temperatures.
