The Lincoln Recovery Center was a thriving cultural center in the South Bronx neighborhood of Mott Haven, hosting maternity clinics and a detox center as well as a rich history of activism and civil protest. This project began as an academic design studio, which I was later commissioned with my professor to develop into a feasibility study for the community lant trust, South Bronx Unite. The significance of the existing building as symbol to the surrounding community led us to preserve its street and park facing facades and build out the zoning envelope to maximize flexibility and minimize cost. The existing building areas were to host the permanent programmatic spaces, such as a theater, a kitchen, and several workshops, while the additional floors were to be used for flexible work and educational areas. The proposal also features a modular kit-of-parts to create temporary subdivisions of the space as the needs of the users changed. The process heavily involved community engagement activities and presentations along with a formal proposal summarizing our investigations and design concept.
